Phi Kappa Tau’s Barn Rates In “Best of Cal State Fullerton” Survey

Titan Magazine, published by CSUF for Titan alumni, sponsored a survey from late 2005 through July 2006 looking for “The Best Of Cal State Fullerton”. Of note, Phi Kappa Tau/ The Barn appears in two catagories of the Survey. In the “Best Social Gatherings/Best Student Hangouts” catagory, The Barn was mentioned along with Off Campus Pub, Rockin' Taco, Downtown Fullerton, and the old Velvet Hog (we’re talkin’ mid-late 60’s on this one...The Velvet Hog was located on Nutwood, where today’s Hope University now stands...) In the second category “Favorite Activities” the Survey had this to say: “Of 38 different extracurricular activities named in the survey, Titans chose intramural sports as the most popular pastime, followed by the Daily Titan and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity”. So you can break out in the Chant: “We’re #3, We’re #3... Thanks to all who voted in the Survey.... to access the Survey follow this link: http://www.titanmag.com/2006/bestcsuf/index.html

CSUF; City of Fullerton Imposing More Social Event Controls on Fraternities

March 2006: In early 2005, CSUF’s Dean of Students implemented new controls on fraternity social events held at fraternity properties where alcohol is present. This resulted from  several incidents of assaults in the area known as Fraternity Row (Teri Place/Associated Road) which caused CSUF implement the following: 1) Fraternities are limited to 4 social events (where alcohol is present) per Semester. Three of these Events must be held system-wide (6 fraternities) on the same night. A fourth event may be held by each Chapter, but must be pre-registered. 2)All such Social Events must have outside Security Guards, to be hired by the Chapter. 3) Guest Lists must be submitted to CSUF in advance. 4) Procedures for alcohol control, access to the Event, and behaviour of guests must be in line with FIPG Risk Management guidelines. In February 2006, the City of Fullerton began enforcing City Ordinances more strickly, particularly rules involving “Conditional Use Permits” (CUP’s), which are special Permits granted by the City to certain organizations (Phi Kappa Tau has a CUP..as do 3 other Frathernities, and 6 sororities). In order to host Social Events where alcohol is present, a Chapter mus now have a CUP ‘in force’. In addition, depending on the size of the Social Event (number of Guests), the host fraternity must pay for Fullerton police officers, who will be present during the Event. There are other rules which may also apply. These actions have caused the Chapters at CSUF to re-evaluate where and how to hold social events. More to follow...

“We Are The Champions” - Greek Week Winners!

David Lee Fall 98, Alumni Correspondent: April 22, 2006 BULLETIN......... Just wanted to let you know the great news! The first ever and history in the making - PKT won Greek Week 2006 in the categories of OVERALL, THEME,  FUNDRAISING. It was a long but rewarding week for these distinguished gentlemen. I'm extremely proud of them as of all the rothers of the past, present and future. At the ceremony, they brought all the Fraternities and Sororities to an utter silence as the Chapter received the OVERALL banner. They immediately sprang up in cheers and yelled in glory, the song "We are the Champions" Queen. The acceptance of the other banners was just icing on the cake. The ending to this Greek Week started bitter and ended sweet. With our boys multi-tasking with their school life to work schedules to the Greek program,> many new and active members struggled to balance their life. However, itas all worth the agony and experience for them. To now know we are the Champions we believed we are, it is now and forever engraved in the stones of Cal State Fullerton that we are Phi-Kappa-Tau: a distinct mark of leadership, tradition, brotherhood, and character. We, as alumnus, should congratulate all these fine gentlemen on their extraordinary efforts and accomplishments to uphold the torch of Phi,Kappa, and Tau for all to see. Building Men of Character Weekend Held

With help from National Leadership Consultant Brad Joutras, and volunteers Dan Garcia (Cal Poly Pomona) and Ken Loewen (Colorado), the first “Builing Men of Character Weekend” (BMC) was held in February for GO Chapter. BMC Weekend is a program put together by the national fraternity, and over 40 such events have been held in the last 2 years accross the country. It was funded from a $500 Grant from the PKT Foundation, matched by funds from the GO Chapter Education Grant Fund. Chapter members met in the Titan Student Union on Friday night, where they did team-building exercises before bedding down in the TSU basement for the night. On Saturday, they divided in to teams and debated some of the hot  issues  in the Greek system today, including the “image” of fraternities and how recruitment is affected, risk management of alcohol and drugs, and other topics. They also did planning for the Chapter going forward. A followup session is planned where Brad Joutras will return and discuss progress.
