Founder's Day Event, March 2000

Founder´s Day Golf Tourney Event Is Well-Attended

With 36 golfers and perfect weather, the 2nd Annual Founder´s Day Golf Tourney was a rousing success, netting over $1000 to the GO Gazette Operations Fund, $200 to the Chapter´s Scholarship Fund, and over $350 to the House Corp Building Fund, thanks to two of our `senior´ (and most impatient to get on the golf course) Alumni. Now known as the "Nitroglycerin Foursome, minus One" Jim Peterson (`62) and Don Black (`62) plunked down a $375 donation to the House Corp Building Fund for the priviledge of teeing off first, along with Jack  Hale (`60), and Doug Houser (`73.. was the "Minus One" of the foursome). "At our age, you never know what´s going to happen...when we saw that our tee-time was 5th, Don and I decided we´d buy our way up to the front" said Brother Peterson, who traveled from New Mexico for the event. This must have been a `magic foursome´, since Dough Hauser also won "Closest To The Pin"..for the 2nd year in a row!!

Over 50 Alumni attended Founders Day BBQ; Jim Peterson (62), upper left, and Jim Blackwell(66), 2nd from right, middle row, won

Felder(67), Blake(68), Dygert(65), Blackwill(66), Christensen(67)

Stephens(78), Sloweziak(78), Clark(77), Camino(83)

"Longest Drive" was won by Boyd Stephens (`78), who flew himself in (literally...) from  Phoenix for the Tourney ... guess his arms weren´t that tired, after all... helluva shot! Both contest winners received golf shirts complements of Phil Kunisch (66), who also donated towels for all players. Brian Clark (77)  also contributed shirts and CD´s from his favorite rock group, White Lies, as prizes. Thanks to all the golfers who contributed during the contests; you raised $200 which will go directly to chapter scholarship! The "winning foursome"of the day with an 8 under par score: Rocky Myers (64), Phil Kunisch, Russ Patterson (65) and Pete Wesselink (64). Pete also just happened to be "Commissioner of Golf" for the event. (Whats that? Do I hear PROTESTS?) Next year we´ll have to find a way to break these guys up! Winning the "Dipstick" awards (traveled the most to get to the event) were Jim Peterson (New Mexico) and Jim Blackwill (66) from Dallas, who will stand out as they drive around their respective states with brand-new "CSUF Alumni" gold license plate holders. The "Walking Wounded" trophy has to go to Dave Lund (66), who played just 5 weeks after back surgery. At the end of the round, he was walking just like Ed Homola on a good day. "Best Dressed/Cutest" had to go to Boyd Stephens and Ted Slowiazek (79), who showed up in matching golfing outfits.

New game invented at BBQ:

Hewitt(83), DeSmith(84), Sorensen(81), Bill Schaefer(80)

Steve Chow '92, Phil Ackerman, '90, Ben Saine, '90, Paul Bivens, '89

Three of the Chapter Founders:
Dick Michaels, Jack Hale, Rod Howorth (all F60)

Would YOU give this man a lift?

Back at the Barn, the golfers met up in the afternoon with another 30+ alumni and chapter members for a BBQ. Rod Howorth (62) and Dick Michaels (60) were both back to the House for the first time in many years, and brought with them some newsclippings from the early 60´s which have bveen preserved (NOT in alcohol, hopefully) at the House, in the newly-enhanced Chapter Room. Many thanks are owed to the brothers who helped: Pete Wesselink, Jack Hale, Gene Felder (67), Scott Sorensen (80), Chris Tyni (98), Tom Fong (96), all helped make phone calls for the event from Dennis Blake´s office. Also, special thanks to Tom Fong(96), who organized the actives on the golf course....Cosmo Kaminski (99), Adolpho Bailon (00), Chris Tyni, Matt Johnson (99).
