Every new candidate for membership to Phi Kappa Tau goes through an "association" period (sometimes called the "pledge period" in other fraternities) The purpose of this six week
program is to instruct the new Associates (who are typically formed into a "class") about the tradition, structure and values of the fraternity, and to let them get to know the members.
Associates learn local and national history, the Creed of Phi Kappa Tau, chapter and CSUF Risk Management policies (in accordance with FIPG Risk Management Guidelines) and
other information about the fraternity and the CSUF Greek system. Associates also begin participating in the business of the fraternity early in the period by attending portions of regular chapter
meetings.
During the association period, new
members participate in Phi Kappa Tau's "Building Men of Character” Program. This award-winning program is designed to produce well-rounded individuals by having participation in weekly discussions and team-oriented activities. Each week a new topic is discussed, the subject matter based on challenges facing today's college students.
At the end of the six week BMC Program, the candidate must pass a comprehensive test, which then leads to formal initiation into Phi Kappa Tau, once grades (2.4 GPA minimum) are verified.
The desired result of he Program is to
produce an individual with a college degree and some practical "life lessons" to add to his education. Subjects not usually taught in the classrooms on campus, such as social skills, organizational and motivational skills, are learned through the fraternity experience. The BMC Program is the beginning of that learning experience for new members of Phi Kappa Tau.
